quark < Χρησιμοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά το 1963 από τον Murray Gell-Mann που ανακάλυψε αυτά τα στοιχειώδη σωματίδια. Η λογοτεχνική σύνδεση με το έργο τού James Joyce Finnegans Wake έγινε αργότερα.
