insulin < λατινική insula (νησί)· η ινσουλίνη παράγεται στις λεγόμενες «νησίδες του Langerhans», στο πάγκρεας. Ο Paul Langerhans (1847-1888) ήταν Γερμανός ανατόμος που ανακάλυψε τις περιοχές αυτές.
